EN 590 diesel specification explained

EN 590 is the European standard for automotive diesel. Here is what it specifies, what “10 ppm” means, how summer and winter grades differ and how quality and price are established in a cargo deal.

In brief

EN 590 sets the requirements for automotive diesel sold in Europe, including a sulphur limit of 10 mg/kg.

Cold-weather properties are defined by temperate grades and arctic classes, chosen per country and season.

Quality is proven by independent laboratory analysis of each cargo against the full specification.

What is EN590 diesel?

EN590 diesel is automotive diesel that meets the European standard EN 590, published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). It is the reference quality for diesel sold at filling stations in Europe and is also used in many other markets.

The standard defines limits for sulphur, cetane number, density, distillation, flash point, cold-weather behaviour, lubricity and biodiesel (FAME) content, among others. In trade, “EN 590 10 ppm” is often used as shorthand for this quality, sometimes also called ULSD (ultra low sulphur diesel).

What does 10 ppm mean in EN 590 diesel?

It means that the diesel contains no more than 10 mg of sulphur per kg, which corresponds to 10 parts per million by weight. This is the sulphur limit set by EN 590 and by EU fuel quality rules for road diesel.

Low sulphur content protects exhaust after-treatment systems such as particulate filters and catalytic converters and reduces sulphur emissions. A cargo offered as “EN 590 10 ppm” must prove this value in the certificate of quality from an independent laboratory.

What are the key properties in the EN 590 diesel specification?

Key properties include sulphur, cetane number and cetane index, density, viscosity, flash point, distillation, FAME content, water and lubricity. Selected requirements for temperate climates are shown below.

PropertyRequirement (selected)
Sulphurmax. 10 mg/kg
Cetane numbermin. 51
Density at 15 °C820–845 kg/m³
Flash pointabove 55 °C
Viscosity at 40 °C2.00–4.50 mm²/s
FAME contentmax. 7% (v/v)

The full list of properties and test methods is in the current edition of EN 590; contracts should refer to it and name the edition.

What are EN 590 summer and winter grades?

EN 590 defines cold-weather classes: grades A to F for temperate climates and classes 0 to 4 for arctic climates. Each country decides which grade applies in which season.

The temperate grades are defined by the cold filter plugging point (CFPP), from grade A (+5 °C) to grade F (–20 °C). Arctic classes have additional requirements for low temperatures. A buyer should therefore specify not only “EN 590” but also the required grade for the destination and season.

Which HS code applies to EN 590 diesel?

Diesel (gas oil) falls under HS heading 2710. In the EU Combined Nomenclature, gas oils with a sulphur content not exceeding 0.001% by weight are classified under CN 2710 19 43.

Diesel blended with biodiesel is classified under a different subheading of heading 2710. Because blending, use and national rules affect the classification, the exact code should be confirmed with the customs broker for each shipment. Diesel is also subject to excise duty in the EU, which depends on the country of consumption.

How is the EN 590 diesel price formed?

Cargo prices are usually agreed as a differential to a market reference, such as price assessments published by price reporting agencies or the ICE low sulphur gasoil futures contract, averaged over an agreed pricing period.

The differential reflects location, cargo size, delivery period, freight and quality details. Fixed price lists for EN 590 do not exist in genuine cargo trade; offers with prices far below the reference are a classic warning sign. We do not publish prices; they are agreed per verified transaction.

How is EN 590 quality checked in a cargo deal?

An independent inspection company samples the product at loading and analyses it against the full EN 590 specification. The results are documented in a certificate of quality, together with a certificate of quantity.

  • Sampling from shore tanks and vessel tanks according to recognised standards
  • Laboratory analysis of all properties required by the contract
  • Quantity determination from tank measurements and temperature correction
  • Retention samples kept for later disputes

A certificate is only reliable if it can be confirmed directly with the issuing inspection company.

What else must an EN 590 buyer check?

Besides quality, the buyer must check the origin of the product and the identity of the seller. EU sanctions prohibit refined products from Russia and restrict products refined from Russian crude in third countries.

A documented origin, verifiable through refinery, terminal and inspection documents, is a precondition for any transaction we broker. This is general information, not legal advice; applicable rules should be checked for each transaction.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Commodity trading questions, answered

Is EN 590 the same as ULSD?

Largely: EN 590 diesel is an ultra low sulphur diesel with max. 10 mg/kg sulphur. ULSD is a broader term also used for other national standards, so the exact specification should always be named.

Does EN 590 diesel contain biodiesel?

It may contain up to 7% by volume of FAME (biodiesel) under EN 590. Whether and how much is blended is stated in the specification and the certificate of quality.

What is the difference between EN 590 and gasoil 0.1%?

EN 590 is road diesel with a 10 mg/kg sulphur limit, while gasoil 0.1% has a sulphur limit of 0.1% and is used for heating, industry or shipping. They are different products with different specifications.

What is the density of EN 590 diesel?

For temperate grades, EN 590 requires a density between 820 and 845 kg/m³ at 15 °C. Arctic classes allow lower densities.

Who issues the certificate of quality for EN 590?

An independent inspection company or accredited laboratory appointed under the contract, for example SGS, Bureau Veritas or Intertek.
