EN590 diesel price: how it is formed and why “price today” offers mislead

Wholesale EN590 diesel has no fixed list price. Cargoes are priced in US dollars per metric tonne against published benchmarks, plus or minus a premium. Here is how that formula works, how tonnes convert to litres and which price claims are typical of fraudulent offers.

In brief

Wholesale EN590 diesel is priced in USD per metric tonne as a benchmark average over a pricing period plus or minus a premium.

Benchmarks are Platts assessments for 10 ppm diesel in Northwest Europe and the ICE Low Sulphur Gasoil futures contract.

A fixed “EN590 price today per MT” in an online offer is not how genuine cargo trade works and is often a sign of fraud.

Is there an EN590 price today per MT?

Not in the sense of a fixed list price. Genuine EN590 cargoes are priced by formula: the average of a published benchmark over an agreed pricing period, plus or minus a negotiated premium or discount.

Benchmark prices change every trading day, and the final invoice price of a cargo is only known once the pricing period has ended. A seller who quotes a flat “EN590 10ppm price today” that stays valid for weeks, or for monthly deliveries over a year, is not describing how the physical market works.

What a serious counterparty can name is the structure: which benchmark, which pricing period, which premium, which Incoterms® rule and which delivery location. The actual number is agreed for a specific, verified transaction. We do not publish diesel prices.

What is the Platts price for EN590 diesel?

Platts, a price reporting agency of S&P Global, publishes daily assessments for 10 ppm diesel, for example ULSD 10 ppm CIF NWE cargoes or FOB ARA barges. These assessments are subscription-based and are a common reference in European diesel contracts.

  • CIF NWE cargoes: larger seaborne cargoes delivered to Northwest Europe, cost, insurance and freight included.
  • FOB ARA barges: smaller barge lots loaded in the Amsterdam–Rotterdam–Antwerp area.

Other price reporting agencies publish comparable assessments. Because the data is licensed, free websites that show an “en590 platts price today” are usually repeating delayed or approximate figures. Contract parties work with the official assessment named in the contract, not with a screenshot.

What is ICE Low Sulphur Gasoil and how does it relate to EN590?

ICE Low Sulphur Gasoil is a futures contract for 10 ppm diesel with delivery in the ARA region, quoted in US dollars per tonne. It is the main exchange-traded reference for diesel in Europe.

Physical contracts often refer to the futures settlement prices, or use them to hedge price risk between purchase and sale. An “en590 price chart” on a financial website usually shows this futures contract, not the price at which a specific cargo can be bought.

The futures price is a reference for a standardised product in a specific location. Freight, quality details, cargo size and timing still have to be reflected in the premium or discount.

How is an EN590 cargo price calculated?

Formula price = average of the benchmark quotations over the pricing period ± premium or discount. The pricing period is often a set number of quotation days around the bill of lading date.

ElementWhat the contract defines
BenchmarkThe exact assessment or futures contract, e.g. a Platts quotation or ICE Low Sulphur Gasoil
Pricing periodWhich quotation days count, e.g. days around the B/L date or a calendar month
Premium / discountNegotiated amount in USD per tonne for location, timing, cargo size and quality
UnitUSD per metric tonne; quantity measured at 15 °C
Delivery basisIncoterms® rule and named place, e.g. FOB loading port or CIF discharge port

Because the price follows the market, the invoice can only be finalised after the pricing period. Payment terms and the payment instrument are agreed alongside the formula.

How do you convert EN590 diesel from tonnes to litres?

Divide the mass by the density at 15 °C. With the EN 590 density range of 820 to 845 kg/m³ for temperate grades, one metric tonne equals about 1,183 to 1,220 litres.

Density at 15 °CLitres per tonneBarrels per tonne
820 kg/m³approx. 1,220 lapprox. 7.67 bbl
845 kg/m³approx. 1,183 lapprox. 7.44 bbl

Volumes in contracts and certificates refer to standard volume at 15 °C, because diesel expands when warm. The actual density from the certificate of quality is used for the conversion, not an assumed value. A price per litre and a price per tonne can therefore only be compared once the density is known.

Which costs come on top of the EN590 product price?

Depending on the delivery basis: freight, insurance, storage or tank rental, terminal handling, inspection and, in the destination country, energy tax and VAT. A benchmark price alone is never the landed cost.

  • Freight and insurance: included in CIF prices, paid separately by the buyer under FOB.
  • Storage and handling: tank rental, throughput and terminal fees.
  • Inspection: independent quantity and quality inspection at loading and, if agreed, at discharge.
  • Duties and taxes: customs formalities, energy or excise tax and VAT under the rules of the country where the diesel is released for consumption.

These items differ by country, terminal and contract and should be clarified with the logistics provider, the customs broker and tax advisers before a deal.

Which HS code applies to EN590 diesel?

Diesel falls under HS heading 2710. In the EU Combined Nomenclature, gas oils with a sulphur content not exceeding 0.001% by weight are classified under CN 2710 19 43.

Diesel containing biodiesel (FAME) is classified under a different subheading of heading 2710. The binding code for a specific shipment should be checked in the EU TARIC database and confirmed with the customs broker. More on the product itself is in our EN 590 diesel specification guide.

What is the difference between EN590 B7 and B0?

B7 contains up to 7% by volume of FAME (biodiesel), the maximum allowed under EN 590; B0 is diesel without added biodiesel. Both can meet EN 590.

Which variant is delivered matters for the price, the customs classification and national blending or tax rules. The contract and the certificate of quality should state the FAME content explicitly instead of only “EN590”.

Which EN590 price offers are red flags?

Prices far below the benchmark, “commission per litre” for a chain of intermediaries, advance payments for tank rental or dip tests, and demands for an SBLC or MT760 before any proof of product are typical warning signs.

  • Price well below Platts or ICE: no genuine seller gives away a margin the market would pay.
  • “Commission per litre” or per barrel: long mandate chains promising a fee per litre to every intermediary are a hallmark of fake EN590 diesel sellers.
  • Fees before inspection: payments for tank storage, injection, dip tests or “tank takeover” before an independent inspector has confirmed the product.
  • Bank instruments first: SBLC, MT760 or proof of funds demanded before the seller has proven title to the product.
  • “Russian origin, no sanctions”: EU sanctions prohibit Russian refined products and restrict products made from Russian crude in third countries; see the FAQ on our petroleum products page.

More patterns are described in our guides on commodity scam warning signs, LOI, ICPO and FCO red flags and payment instruments.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Commodity trading questions, answered

What is the EN590 diesel price per MT?

There is no single fixed price. Cargoes are priced in USD per metric tonne as a benchmark average over a pricing period plus or minus a premium, so the price changes with the market and the contract terms.

Where can I see an EN590 price chart?

Financial websites often show the ICE Low Sulphur Gasoil futures contract. It is a reference for 10 ppm diesel in ARA, not the price of a specific cargo; official Platts assessments require a subscription.

Is a “commission per litre” on EN590 diesel normal?

Offers promising every intermediary in a long chain a commission per litre or per barrel are typical of fraudulent schemes. In genuine trade, any remuneration is agreed in writing between identified parties.

How many litres are in a tonne of EN590 diesel?

About 1,183 to 1,220 litres at 15 °C, depending on the density between 820 and 845 kg/m³. The density from the certificate of quality is decisive.

Why are EN590 quantities measured at 15 °C?

Diesel expands with temperature. Converting to standard volume at 15 °C makes quantities comparable regardless of the temperature at loading or discharge.

How do I find genuine EN590 diesel buyers or sellers?

Genuine buyers and sellers are identifiable companies that pass mutual verification, name the benchmark and pricing terms and accept independent inspection and bank-secured payment. Online lists of “EN590 diesel buyers” or sellers are no substitute for checking the company.

Should I pay for a dip test or tank rental before inspection?

Requests to pay tank, injection or dip-test fees to the seller’s side before an independent inspector has confirmed product and title are a common advance-fee pattern and a reason to stop.
